Game Is Hard Level 278 Breakdown
What You See
Five white horizontal lines, each a different thickness and length, laid out unevenly over a dark grey background. The prompt reads "go thinner, then shorter." At a glance it looks like a sorting puzzle — maybe you're meant to arrange the lines by size. That's the distraction.
The lines are interactive in two separate directions: dragging vertically changes a line's thickness, and dragging horizontally changes its length. The whole puzzle is about doing the two resizes in the right order across all five lines.
Why You're Stuck
I saw five different-sized lines and immediately tried to rank them — thinnest on one end, thickest on the other, or maybe shortest to longest. I'd drag one line and it would change size, but I had no idea if I was making it "right." I also kept thinning and shortening the same line together, switching between the two, and the level refused to acknowledge any of it.
The problem was twofold. I was reading "thinner" and "shorter" as relative terms — thinner than the next line over — when they actually mean "as thin as possible, absolutely." And I was ignoring the word "then," which locks the two actions into a strict order: all thinning first, all shortening second.
The Answer
Make every line reach its minimum thickness first by swiping down on it. Once all five lines are as thin as they can get, make every line reach its minimum length by swiping left on it. With every line shrunk in both dimensions, the level completes.
How to Beat It
Two passes over the lines — thin everything, then shorten everything.
- Step 1: Thin all five lines. Swipe down on the top-most, thickest line to reduce its thickness, then do the same for the other four. Vertical swipes control thickness.
- Step 2: Confirm every line is thin. Keep swiping down on each line until it can't get any thinner. The first phase isn't done until all five are at minimum thickness.
- Step 3: Shorten all five lines. Now swipe left on each line to pull its length down. Work through all five until each one can't get any shorter. They'll all become tiny white dashes and the level clears.
Troubleshooting
- My lines won't shrink: check your swipe direction — up-and-down changes thickness, side-to-side changes length. Swiping the wrong axis does nothing.
- I made everything thin but it won't finish: you also have to shorten them. "Then shorter" is a second, separate pass over all five lines.
- I mixed the two actions: the word "then" is strict. Finish the thinning pass on every line before you start shortening any line.
Why It Works
The level works because it hides a precise two-step command behind a visual that screams "sort me." The uneven starting lines make you think about relative differences, when the instruction actually demands absolute minimums in two ordered passes. The trickiest hidden detail is that thickness and length are two different axes controlled by two different swipes, so the correct gesture has to be matched to the correct dimension.
The Rule to Carry Forward
Read a multi-step command as strict, ordered phases — and push each to its absolute limit. "Thinner, then shorter" means minimum thickness for all, then minimum length for all.
- Honor "then": the word splits the instruction into phases that must be completed in sequence, never interleaved.
- Aim for extremes: unless a target size is given, "thinner" and "shorter" mean the smallest the object can physically go.
- Match gesture to axis: vertical controls thickness, horizontal controls length — experiment with both if one isn't responding.
Do a full pass with one finger motion only — swipe down on all five lines — before switching to side-to-side. The strict order is the entire trick.
Thinning and shortening the same line together. The prompt says "then" — all thinning first, all shortening second.

Game Is Hard Level 278 FAQ
Why aren't my lines changing in Game Is Hard Level 278?
Check your swipe direction. Vertical swipes change thickness and horizontal swipes change length. Also finish thinning every line before you start shortening any.
Do I need a specific thickness or length in Game Is Hard Level 278?
No. Make every line as thin as possible and then as short as possible — keep swiping until each line can't shrink any further.
Does the order matter in Game Is Hard Level 278?
The phase order matters — thinner before shorter — but within each phase you can work on the five lines in any order.
